Between 1888 and 1900, American archaeologists conducted their first explorations in what is now Iraq,
-ancient city of Nippur.
-Leaders of the expedition included Protestant ministers and the editor of the national Sunday-School Times.
-goal: practice biblical archaeology: to confirm the truth of Old Testament accounts of Babylon. As one participant wrote, they sought to blend a “spirit of Christian enlightenment” with modern “scientific inquiry.”
-expeditions unearthed thousands of cuneiform tablets, which Jewish and Christian linguists and anthropologists used to reveal much about ancient Assyrian society. Some investigators found that these discoveries strengthened their faith in biblical truth. Others were not so sure.
