As Britain controlled India, ways of natural financial income for civilians were destroyed, much land was taken away, debt was placed on many civilians' shoulders, royal privileges were replaced, and religious customs were altered. The uprising was sparked in Delhi over an unfair incident for Indian soldiers, other regions quickly responded upon hearing the news, and formed three major centers of Delhi, Kanpur, and Lucknow; the uprising involved 1/6 of India's area of land and 1/10 of the population. The uprising forces were defeated after fighting for a year and a half, due to incomplete unity of the uprising regions, classes, and troops, giving Britain chances to break it down with many royalties that didn't join the uprising. As a result of the uprising, Britain replaced the East India Company and moved into direct governance over India as a colony. However, the uprising stirred up patriot spirits within the country and motivated later movements and efforts fighting for India's independence.
