The Solar Union had been going through a decline, with much of its former territory now being part of the Federation of the Home Systems (a rough translation, as by this point language has long since moved beyond 21st century English). The Federation, much more popular than the decrepit Solar Union even in the Solar System, launched an invasion, and by the time it arrived much of the system had already pledged allegiance to it. Earth, the desired capital planet of the Federation had its Solar Union government overthrown in a nasty war involving a nuclear exchange and another outbreak of Kessler syndrome, however, the Federation was happy to rebuild the planet and turn it into the crown jewel of the Terran Sphere.
