Serfdom in Russia was harsh, and under these conditions Emelian Pugachev came along and claimed to be the tsar (Peter III after returning from a trip. He surrounded himself with duplicates of the imperial family, courtiers, and a sec of state). He then led the most violent peasant uprising-pillaging, burning, and killing through eastern Russia. Famine dispersed them and Pugachev was betrayed, tried, drawn and quartered. Catherine responded by repressing serfs further, to the point of resembling chattel slavery.Добавлено на ленту времени:
