Louis XIV accepted the Spanish crown willed to his grandson, starting the War of the Spanish Succession because it upset the balance of power and the union threatened Britain. France and Spain fought against Britain. France was defeated after twelve years and the Peace of Utrecht ceded his holdings in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and the Hudson Bay to Britain.
