Following the death of Lothair I in 855, Middle Francia was split among his three sons, and the eldest, Louis II, inherited the Carolingian lands in Italy, including Milan. Following Louis II's death without heirs, there were several decades of confusion. The Imperial crown was initially disputed between Carolingian rulers of West Francia and East Francia, with Charles the Fat of the East attaining the prize. Following his deposition, however, local nobles such as Guy III of Spoleto and Berengar of Friuli disputed the crown, and outside intervention did not cease, with Arnulf of Eastern Francia and Louis the Blind of Provence both claiming the throne for a time. The kingdom was also beset by Arab raiding parties from Sicily and North Africa, and central authority was minimal at best. The situation hardly improved in the 10th century, as various Burgandian and local nobleman continued to dispute the crown, and in 962 order was imposed from the outside, when German King Otto I invades Italy and seized both the Imperial and Italian thrones for himself.
