Frederick William (“Great Elector”) wanted to unify Brandenberg, Prussia, and scattered territories along the Rhine (the first two were ruled by Junkers: landowning class and nobility). He persuaded Junkers to accept taxation in turn for reconfirmation of their privileges. Estates’ power declined. William had tripled state revenue and expanded army.
