In 265 CE a Sima prince Sima Yan/Wudi established the Jin dynasty. His court established one of the first legal codes and he reunited China under one monarchy after he overthrew the Wu rulers. The Jin dynasty's culture was influenced by Buddhist art and philosophy.

After Wudi’s death though, the dynasty started to fall apart under the rule of his incompetent successors who split the country into many parts with a price ruling each. The Xiongnu took advantage of this instability to attack and in 311 they sacked the Jin capital, killing the Jin emperor of the time.

After this a Sima prince set up another dynasty called the Dong Jin. This dynasty was served by its generals which allowed them to resist attacks from the north but also caused a general named Huan Wen to set up puppet governments with him ruling instead. Both of them died soon after though. After this there was a quick succession of murdering, taking throne, and then getting murdered until the founding of the short lived Liu Song dynasty.
