Kublai Khan was born in 1215 CE as the 4th son of Tolui, the fourth son of Genghis Khan, and Sorghaghtani Beki. When he was 17 years old, his father died and his uncle, Ogodei Khan gave him a fiefdom of 10,000 households. After Ogodei’s death, his brother Mongke became the Great Khan and granted him the title of the viceroy of northern China. When his brother Mongke died, he became the Great Khan which started a civil war that he later won. As the Great Khan, Kublai khan decided to take over the entirety of China, naming his empire the Yuan Dynasty.

Kublai khan was generally a wise and benevolent ruler, he created many infrastructural changes such as the expansion of the great canal, religious tolerance, scientific achievements and many other things. But, he did fund many failed military campaigns into Vietnam, Burma, Japan, and sakhalin. Kublai khan died at the age of 79 and was buried in mongolia.
