The Sui dynasty was a short yet important dynasty that lasted between 581 to 618 CE. It set the stage for the cultural renaissance that occurred during the Tang dynasty. The Sui started when a high official by the name of Yang Jian/Wendi managed to seize the throne after the fall of the northern Zhou Dynasty. He then went on to conquer both the south and the east to rule over a united china.Wendi then reestablished confucian rituals in the government that were used by the Han dynasty and passed penal and administrative laws that were fairer and more lenient. Additionally he promoted buddhism and Improved his army to make it more self sufficient.
After Wendi, the second emperor, Yangdi, created a massive second capital and the grand canal which still stands today as the longest canal in the world. The Sui dynasty eventually ended when relationships with the Turks deteriorated and when wars in Korea failed.
