The Qin dynasty was the first great Chinese dynasty. It was founded when the state of Qin, one of the feudal states, conquered and defeated the rest of the other states and united China for the first time under the rule of Emperor Qin Shi huang. In order to rule the new land that he had conquered, he created a strict authoritarian government and standardized the writing system, cart sizes, the width of roads, and abolished all previous feudal privileges. He also increased taxes to build many large public works such as canals to connect rivers, roads and bridges.

Qin Shi Huang and his main advisor were legalists, while the scholars and officials who worked for him usually followed confucius values. This led to a difference of ideas and Qin Shi Huang eventually ordered the destruction of all ancient ties to Confucianism by the burning of almost all books and the execution of 460 scholars along with the sentencing of the rest to forced labor.

Qin Shi Huang enlarged and united the great wall of China and sentenced scholars/political rivals to forced labor to build it along with 300,000 soldiers and peasants. When it was finished The Great Wall of China had a length of over 3,000 miles with at least 1,000 beacon towers as a warning mechanism. The Chinese army was sent to guard it so they couldn’t support a popular rebellion.

The Qin dynasty ended shortly after Qin Shi Huang died from drinking “immortality potions” with his son spending most of his reign trying to suppress peasant rebellions.
