Patriot Capt John Ryan escaping from a British prison ship in Charles Town harbor, made his way to the home of a Patriot in Columbia who gave him a horse. On leaving Columbia, Rayn was stopped and captured by Tory Holly and two others. He was released by the Tory commander. Holly stripped Ryan of all his good, clothes and horse.
