The Days of Thunder began when the majority of the glaciers left by the cooling of Abeir-Toril's ocean during the Shadow Epoch finally revealed a supercontinent that would be called Merrouroboros. Life bloomed on this landmass in the form of the creator races and the ancient ape-like ancestors of humans.

- Sarrukh, the reptilian or sauroid creator race, rulers of the Sarrukh Empires from −35,000 DR and creators of the yuan-ti, naga, lizardfolk, and other serpentfolk and scalykind (by merging humans with various creatures). They worship Ouroboros, who teaches them the secrets behind civilized life, how to claim power, and the art of magic.
- Batrachi, the amphibioid creator race, rulers of the Batrachi Empires from −33,500 DR and creators of the bullywugs, doppelgangers, kuo-toa, and other amphibious, piscine, and shapeshifter races. They began to worship Ramenos, the Sleeping God of the Bullywugs.
- Aearee, the avian creator race, rulers of the Aearee Empires from −31,000 DR and creators of the aarakocra, kenku, and other avian humanoids.
- Humans, though still primitive, even ape-like, and dwelling in caves and using simple tools.
- The Phaerimm (slug-shaped intelligent evil aberrations) emerge from the Underdark beneath Merrouroboros.
