-August of 1914, Wilson declared the US policy of neutrality
-England blockaded shipments heading toward Germany including US ships
-The British gov't. impounded and confiscated American ships, but paid for the cargo, reducing the pressure that American merchants would have put on the US gov't. to take action against the blockade
-Germany countered the blockade with submarines/ U-boats
-international law said an attacker had to warn civilian ships before attacking, but submarines didn't do that b/c it would eliminated their main advantage
-The Lusitania was sunk by German submarines in 1915 killing 128 Americans
-1917, the British intercepted a telegram from Germany to Mexico, urging them to declare war on the US so we would stay out of the European War. also suggested that they would aid Japan to attack the US as well. Known as the Zimmermann telegram
-War Industry Board: created to coordinate all the facets of industrial and agricultural production, sought to guarantee that not only the Unites States but also the rest of the Allied would be well supplied
-Espionage and Sedition Acts
-Selective Service Act of 1917 passed
-FBI is created to prevent radicals from taking over
-Palmer Raids
Committee on Public Information created images of Germans as cold blooded, baby killing, power hungry huns
-More industrial work was presented to women as the men were drafted to war and their jobs left vacant
-The Great Migration came due to the draft
-Wilson's fourteen points
-War ended with the Treaty of Versailles in which Germany was left humiliated
-League of Nations debates were ongoing
