This was a series of costly battles where the Union, led by General Grant, attacked Northern Virginia intending to defeat General Lee and end the Civil War. Even though the Union did lose some battles and suffered higher casualties than the Confederate army, it was a Union victory and it reduced the insurrection to a war of attrition, in which the Union won.
