Barack Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States of America. On January 20, 2009, he was inaugurated and he was the first African American to hold that office.
He studied at Harvard Law School and practices constitutional law in Chicago. In 1996, he began his political career in the Illinois State Senate, and in 2004 he announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat that had just become vacant.
In February 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. His appearances in both the primaries and the general election drew impressive crowds and his message of hope and change ("Yes We Can") inspired a lot of people.
Due to his popularity, he was re-elected president in the 2012 presidential election.
