The Suez Crisis occurred between the time periods of October 29, 1956 and November 7, 1956. It took pace in the Suez Canal in Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula in the Gaza Strip. On July 1956, President Gamal Abdel Nasser wanted to nationalize the Suez Canal, which is still controlled by Great Britain and France, in addition to fund for the Aswan Dam on the Nile River. The West Nations opposed this idea because two-thirds of Europe's oil flowed through those waterways. As a response to the attack on the Sinai Peninsula, France and Britain worked together on an invasion on October 29, 1956. The invasion escalated and ended up with the Anglo-French forces bombing Egypt in order to protect the Canal. The U.S. and the Soviet Union got involved and pressured the fighting to stop. They threatened with nuclear weapons and other threats. The effect of the war was Eden's resignation and Egypt opened the canal for commercial shipping.
