In central Europe, reformers/idealists like Martin Luther, John Calvin and Henry VIII challenged papal authority and questioned the Catholic Church’s ability to define Christian practice. They argued for a religious and political redistribution of power into the hands of Bible, triggering wars, persecutions and the Counter-Reformation, the Catholic Church’s delayed but forceful response to the Protestants. although the Reformation was bloody and may have cost Germany 40% of its population at the time, it promoted individualism in the form of religious freedom and may be one of the reasons we have religious freedoms today.
