A nephew to Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis Napoleon ruled France from 1848 to 1852 as the first and only president of the French Second Republic until he overthrew legislation through a coup and after a popular vote became emperor of the French Empire. During his reign, Napoleon III improved French agriculture, infrastructure, and the economy, as well as reconstructed Paris. He aimed to make France a once again great European power, and signed many trade agreements, brought France into the Crimean War, and assisted the unification of Italy.
