The allied invasion of Italy was the allied amphibious landing on mainland Italy that took place from September 3rd 1943 to September 17th. Following the defeat of the axis powers in North America, there was a scuffle between the allied towards the next step. American general Mark W. Clark called Italy “the soft underbelly of the axis” due to the power or lack thereof in Italy’s army, but would later call it “one tough gut”. During that time, Italian support for the war was declining, and an invasion would knock Italy out of the axis, thus decreasing influence in the Mediterranean Sea.

On September 3rd 1943, the British army’s XII corps, launched operation Baytown under general Bernard Montgomery’s direction. Upon landing, opposition towards the landings were light and Italian troops surrendered almost immediately.
