Rutherford B. Hayes was the 21st president of the United States. He was a compromise republican candidate in the election of 1876, which due to limitations of the constitution was in deadlock until 1877. Before being president, he was governor of influential swing-sate Ohio for three terms and was dubbed "The Great Unknown." His election was part of the compromise of 1877 and ended reconstruction. After his presidency, Republicans stopped advocating for racisl equality.
