The rise of merch for anime and the implosion of anime in the public realm has garnered more exposure and/or attraction by "normies". It had led to the transition period of gradual acceptance of anime as a form of acceptable media entertainment for the average person as opposed to closet-watching (Due to stigma associated with watching anime/cartoons in general). It is not without its negativity, but it certainly was a period of another full swing embrace that finally shook off a great deal of its stigma- to an extent.
