Over around 500,000 South Asians went to British West Indian plantations (British Guiana, Trinidad, Jamaica, etc) to work as coolie laborers.

Often times, Asians were lured or tricked into labor contracts overseas. Most workers were abused, overworked, and given little to no pay. Despite slavery being abolished in 1865, many turned toward South Asians for opportunities of cheap labor and exploitation. I find that the subject of coolie labor is skimmed over or not mentioned sufficiently in K-12 schooling. Coolie labors plays a key role in understanding physical/labor exploitations of Asian immigrants and their future trajectories for job opportunity in America.
