Zheng He, born Ma He, was a mariner, fleet admiral, explorer, and diplomat during the Ming Dynasty from early China. From 1405 to 1433, he led seven expeditionary voyages in search of treasure in the South China Sea.

On February 25th, 1425, in the middle of his series of voyages, the Hongxi Emperor appointed Zheng He as the defender of Nanjing and told him to use his treasure fleet for defensive purposes. He was eventually allowed to use the fleet for it's original purpose of searching for treasure and valuables.

There are several theories as to why Zheng He died. One theory states that he died shortly after his seventh and final voyage in 1433, while another claims that he continued to serve as defender of Nanjing until 1435.
