ok so way back when there was this advanced civilization on the other side of the shadow sea
they evolved like any other, meaning they had their cavemen, their mesopotamians, their greeks, their renaissance and all that, too, until a bunch of them gathered together like a giant united nations well after their industrial era
naturally, this wouldn't have been all of them, but all the rest have been completely destroyed as opposed to the minimal of evidence left of the great civ
and eventually this one became what u might think of when thinking about advances civilizations
we don't know anything about them other than the fact that they worshipped the stars (and what remains of their technology reflects this (they believed them to be the remnants of the ones who came before, the ones who shaped the world they love live in)) and we're going to keep it that way
before them, though, there were these trees, these gates and their gatekeepers
no one knew where they lead or why they were even being guarded, if they were gates at all or if that was just an old legend
one day, their top scientists are like 'yo, there's this giant fucking storm headed right for us, what are we gonna do'
advanced civilizations doing what advanced civilzations do decide to bicker among themselves, some arguing for trying to get the portals working and leaving, some arguing against the storm saying it doesn't exist, and some arguing for figuring out how to stop it
their elders, their sages, probably argued to ride out the storm, that their time had come, and they all just had to accept this
not a very popular solution, of course, so half of them decided to go for plan a, half for plan b
plan a was to hunt down the gatekeepers and force them to tell them how to use the portals
the gatekeepers wouldn't talk, though, and they were all hunted to extinction
plan b started working on a machine to stop the storm before it hit or figure out how to endure it
but they were too late and the storm was too great
one scientist worked with one of the sages and together they calculated and thought and figured out that this was only the second of five major cataclysms to come
that's right, baby
it's number 2
meaning someone was wiped out before even them, there was probably an even greater, more advanced civilization before them that we know nothing about, destroyed by fire somehow which is great bc i did not know how to fix that
ok so anyway, this scientist has all the calculations, but no time to put them in place and save them all, so he writes it all down in this journal (maybe a holographic journal that's survived even to this day) and gives it to his wife as she flees across the sea with group c, the only ones who actually survives, while he stayed behind to try to salvage their civilisation the best he could
he failed, but uknow
the wife lives out her days with the remains of her people in underground bunkers where they would be safe from the cataclysm they just survived and also -- the natives of the land dundundun
she left the holographic journal here, whether to be found by future peoples or just bc she died
no one knows what happened to her nor the rest of the inhabitants of the bunkers, they just disappeared and their bones do not remain
the journal contains equations and predictions, scientific stuff to help protect the future generations from the next cataclysm
cian finds it and tries to solve the science thingies and is like 'huh, this guy really wanted to help us survive the cataclysm ... what if ...' and the rest is history
