The Cold War between the Soviet Union and the U.S., and it was called a "cold war" because no actual fighting broke out. Instead, both the U.S. and the Soviet Union made tons of nuclear bombs- the U.S. made them because they wanted to stop the spread of communism that the Soviets were spreading.
