In 1959, Fidel Castro, a revolutionary, took over the regime of Fulgencio Batista. Castro wanted to turn all the private land owned by Americans into national land. To counter this, Americans trained Cuban exiles to go fight for what they have lost. This turns out to be a colossal failure and most of the exiled end up being captured.

This was a major mistake by the united states. It directly violated the U.S foreign policy and the victory for Castro helped promote him and turned him into a national hero. This also led Cuban to stray further away from the United States and formed close a relationship with the Soviet Union, who armed Cuban with weapons.
