From the 1960s to the 1980s Afghanistan, most Muslim countries were making progress to a more Westernized lifestyle. Both boys and girls had the right to an education up to the high-school level and women who were capable were allowed to attend college. University professor, Dr. Bill Podlich, partnered with UNESCO for a two-year study in Afghanistan to observe the way Afghan people live and their culture. He was able to observe Afghanistan before the Taliban took over. He described the people as alive and happy. His photos show girls smiling during school lessons, boys playing around in the Kabul river, marketplaces and gardens alive with colorful flowers and laughter. One famous picture that has been circulated around for a while from this time is a picture of three Afghan women wearing miniskirts while attending Kabul University. This iconic picture shows how free women were and the rights they had during this time. They were not restricted in their attire or their education.

For about two joyous decades, matters in Afghanistan finally seemed to be going right and progressing. People from around the world were visiting the country, stunned by the beauty of the country and the vivacity of the inhabitants. Many people today, especially in the United States, see Afghanistan as a ungovernable and war-torn country as a means to not engage with them. This shows how drastic of a change the Taliban made when they invaded Afghanistan. They destroyed what was seen as a progressive and blissful place and turned it into an authoritarian and fearful dystopian society. The Taliban created such a huge impact on the world by managing to get rid of Afghanistan’s progressive history and ultimately make it non-existent. This impression has led to numerous citizens to speak out and advocate against them.
