Under the pretense of giving Afghanistan support, the Soviet Union invades Afghanistan. The Brezhnev Doctrine stated that the USSR could intervene in any state where communist/socialist rule was attacked so they used that as justification to invade Afghanistan since the communist party there had assassinated the Soviet-supported leader and seemed to look like it would switch loyalties with the US. The rest of the world denounced the USSR's actions and many countries like the US (and even China now) supported the resistance forces. The Soviet Union nearly won, but the heavily supported Afghan forces won out in the end and negotiations ended the conflict. This conflict was important to the Cold War at large as many saw it as the USSR expending lots of resources like the US did with Vietnam and Korea so both sides were equally exhausted now.
