Gorbachev knew that two of the biggest problems that plagued the Soviet system were secrecy and distrust. To that effect, he instituted the era and ideal of Glasnost or "openness" where he made governmental procedures and trials more public as well as allowing foreign press increased access to the USSR. Perhaps the biggest change he made in the Glasnost period was the allowance, and even encouragement of the people to criticize the Soviet system, its leaders, and the government in order to come up with solutions. For the first time in the USSR's long history, people had some semblance of free speech, and they made use of it by protesting and calling for the dissolution of the USSR.
