during the late eighteen hundreds tariffs provided around half of the national Revenue for the United States. Many Western Farmers as well as Eastern capitalists ended up disagreeing on the issue of tariffs on foreign input should be high or low. Republican Congressman raised tariffs in order to protect the US industry and fund the Union government but after the war the Southern Democrats as well as some Northern Democrats were against these high tariffs because they didn't want to raise the price on consumer goods. Also another result of this Tariff was that many other nations ended up retaliating by placing their own taxes on u.s. Products. This led to many American farmers losing some overseas sales.
