Bleeding Kansas (1 янв 1855 г. – 1 янв 1861 г.)

Описание:

After the passage of the Kansas Nebraska Act, conflict between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery sides erupted. Stephen Douglas, the proposer of the bill that started this conflict, expected the slavery decision to be handled in a peaceful manner because of antislavery farmers that moved to Kansas, but slaveholders from the neighboring state bought homesteads in Kansas so as to win the majority of the territory. Free-soilers and abolitionists from the North organized the New England Emigrant Aid Company in 1855 that paid for antislavery settlers to be transported to Kansas. Fighting ensued between the pro-slavery side and the anti-slavery side; “Bleeding Kansas” was the name in which the territory was named because of this harsh fighting. Pro-slavery groups from Missouri crossed the state border and decided to establish a legislature in Lecompton (KS), but the antislavery groups were already making their own legislature in Topeka. The attacks grew bloodier as time went on, but the Pierce administration stayed uninvolved; as a result, the Democratic party grew to be divided between the Southern and Northern sections.
