Stalin eliminates all of his potential rivals by having them either assassinated or put on show trials to have them executed. The first of these assassinations took place in Leningrad, where he had Kirov shot and used that assassination as an excuse to scare the rest of the country. This allowed him to put his fellow communist leaders on show in trials, where they repeated false confessions and were shot. This happened to Zinovyev and Kamenev in August of 1936, another in January of 1937, Tukhachevsky and other military officials in June of 1937, and one final trial in 1938. He also removes several party bosses, military leaders, industrial managers, high government officials, semi-independent Bolsheviks, foreign Communists, and members of the NKVD.
