The French set up Vietnam as a state with Emperor Bao Dai in charge, they wanted the state to have similarities to the west, but a man name Ho Chi Minh wanted the country to be a communist country. Ho started a communist revolution and he took over the North Part of Vietnam. A treaty at the Geneva Conference separated the country on the 17th parallel. The US did not want to have friends of anyone related to the USSR, so Eisenhower backed Diem in the south. Kennedy sent many troops and tried to help the south as much as possible. A coup took over the south and the next US president, Johnson decided to increase Economic support to the south. Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin so that Johnson could have more war powers and send bomb strikes on North Vietnam. In 1965 Johnson decided to send around 450000 troops from 1965- 1966 to help South Vietnam. On January 31, 1968, some 70,000 DRV forces under General Vo Nguyen Giap and started the Tet offensive on South Vietnam, they only held some cities for 1 to 2 days. On March 16th 1968 A group of American Soldiers killed the entire village of My Lai, it added a lot of heat to the war and got people riled up. In Jnauary 1973 North Vietnam and the US signed a peace agreement, but until April 1975 the war between the North and South ended when the DRV captured Saigon. The war effected the population of Vietnam a lot they lost 3.3 million people. The Vietnam war had a large effect on pop culture, many movies were related to the war.
