J. Paul Jewell was hired as faculty at KCKJC to teach economics, American and local history, English and literature. He became one of the most highly respected faculty in the history of the college retiring in 1988 after serving for 41 years at KCKCC. The Jewell Building at KCKCC was dedicated to him in 1995. Jewell is the author of The History of Kansas City Kansas Community College published in 1996. His book covers the history of the college from 1923 to 1995. From his book it is clear that one of his greatest passions was serving as the Director of Student Activities for 15 years. He also served as assistant football coach, and assistant basketball coach. He was the first President of the Higher Education Committee of KNEA-NEA. Jewell wrote the plan for the new form of city government and received the Golden Key to the City of Kansas City, Kansas. As a result of his long tenure at the college, his recognizable face is represented in more historic photographs than any other single person.
