Harold feels secure enough to go to the continent. A charter drawn up on 13th November shows he was present at the court of the count of Flanders, Baldwin, who had helped the Godwins. It may be that at this point he is on the return leg of a journey to Rome, because the Life of King Edward suggests that he went to Rome at some point. A final reason for his trip may hev been to secure the return of Edward the Exile from Hungary. The only reason this might be the case is that he was the compromise candidate, and that Edward the Exile turned up in early 1057.
