After the extreme manifestation of Enlightenment ideals in the French Revolution, people generally rejected what such ideals had done in practice. People were also seeking a refuge from industrial revolution logic in the irrational and in personal emotion.

This era was steeped in nationalism as European countries tried to establish their distinct national identities. "Common folk" music was generally regarded as the "authentic" spirit and true embodiment of a nation. This fascination with folk melodies also resulted in valuing rural life and nature. Since pleasing popular audiences was gaining necessity, and audiences were calling for national identity, nationalistic sentiments continued to grow.
