The technological and scientific innovations of the late 18th century and early 19th century caused many social and economic changes to American society and led to religious leaders calling for the renewal of American spirituality. This was an Evangelical revival movement that began in the South and spread North. Evangelical churches hosted revivals, celebrated conversions, and organized missionary societies. This movement preached that anyone could achieve salvation, and thus, appealed to small farmers, workers, women and African Americans. This Awakening was larger than the first, and its significance is that it increased the presence of protestant churches in the North and it led to social reforms such as prison reform, the women's movement, the temperance movement and the movement to abolish slavery. All of these social reforms and social movements changed American society.
