Murray spends childhood with maternal grandparents in Grenada (19 фев 1953 г. – 18 янв 1960 г.)

Описание:

P. 35 Murray book: In the meanwhile, in Grenada, for the first seven years of my life I grew up in the simplest island setting. I walked to school without shoes and played football (what Americans call soccer) with a metal can. I had no toys, except for the small trinket (a whistle or another minor item) given to children at the Christmas party held annually for children whose family members, like my grandfather Phillip, were employed on the Grand Bras estate in Mt. Horne.

Even the simple task of brushing my teeth was not so simple, nor was it pleasant. To brush my teeth I had to break off a twig from a tree, and finely splay one end of it to use it as my toothbrush. But I also don't remember any of us needing to have orthodontics, nor having dental caries. It could also have been that we didn't eat much sugar. I didn't know better, and even if I did, I hadn't seen much of the other modern types of toothbrushes used in my surroundings. Our house as well as the community at large had no electricity so there was no television but we had a battery-powered radio. Kerosene lamps provided the light. Outdoor latrines were the only toilets. Outdoor clay ovens were used instead of stoves. Yet I was happy and content despite the scarcity of such basic goods. I accepted it as a way of life. I never felt poor, because I did not then know what it was to be rich. I loved my surroundings and my family, especially my grandmother who initially taught me my sense of pride during those formative years.
