After his father, King George V, died in 1936, Edward succeeds his father as the new King of the United Kingdom.

While King, Edward faced a new problem...
His mistress, Wallis Simpson who Edward wished to marry.

Once he invited Prime Minister Baldwin to Buckingham Palace, Edward told Baldwin of his desire to marry Wallis once she became free to remarry.
Baldwin informed the King that this act would go against the Church of England who didn't allow remarriage after divorce and the King should support this.

Edward VIII proposed an idea - he remains as King and marries Wallis but only in a morganatic marriage and any children they have will not inherit the throne. This would be rejected by the British government and its dominions.

Baldwin soon gave Edward a choice - be with Wallis and step down or remain as the king and not marry Wallis.

This choice was hard for Edward, not to mention that the British public was against their marriage too.

On Dec 11, he made his choice to remain as King. This made the parliament and the Church pleased with the outcome, but for Edward this hurt him enormously. He planned to keep his relationship with Wallis secret from the public.

After hearing Edward choose to remain as the king of the UK, Wallis understands this choice and continues to support Edward.
