West 200 Acres- Vernon & Lois Roth (2 янв 1944 г. – 1 янв 1999 г.)
Описание:
Vernon Roth obtained the West 200 acres of camp (and some surrounding property) in several purchases made in the 40's and 50's, and used the land for timbered pasture and a little bit of cropland. While many have been torn out now, there are still some splintered posts and jagged barbed wire lying among the forested parts of the Camp property, which once served to fence the pasture off into multiple sections for grazing. It was sometimes the Roth children’s responsibility to guide the cattle through the timber from one section to another after they had grazed in one location for long enough, and also to bring them in to the farmstead to be milked when it came time.
Aside from agriculture, the Roth farm served as a place of community on occasion. Members of local congregations drove there after Sunday school from time to time for a picnic along the pond or out by the woods. Lois and Vernon’s daughter Joanne married Roger Roth at the farmstead in 1960. They recall playing softball with siblings, cousins, and other family members in the clearing out where the camp lodge is now. Joanne, Roger, and undoubtedly others enjoyed the creek and forest’s beauty as they went on walks through the property. The regularly-maintained nature trails that now wind throughout Camp property did not exist at that time, but as children Joanne and her siblings ran into the forest to play “make-believe” and other games.
Vernon and Lois eventually moved down to Kansas. They sold most of the West 200 acres to CCCC the year after it was established, and then gave the rest of it to the camp through sales and donations in 1999.
