Due to concerns with Nazi Germany’s development with atomic bombs, the US began the development of their own atomic bombs. The Germans were mostly already defeated in Europe. Japan, on the other hand, showed no intentions to surrender even with all odds turned against them. To which the Allied forces demanded Japan’s surrender or facing threats of destruction. Originally, the US planned to conventionally invade Japan. However, this could lead to American casualties likely reaching up to a million. To avoid such a costly method of invasion, President Truman of US decided to drop two atomic bombs over Japan’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Hiroshima bomb killed an estimation of 70,000 - 140,000 out of Hiroshima’s population of 350,00 and put the majority of Hiroshima’s buildings in ruins. 60,000 - 80,000 were killed in Nagasaki. Deaths may either be caused by the explosion itself or exposure to radiation’s long-term effects. This incident is important to the Sino-Japanese relations as this led to Japan’s surrender and the end of the Sino-Japanese war. However, this does not mean that the tensions between China and Japan were resolved. For example, China had not forgiven Japan for the atrocities committed against them.
