The life of Cyrus, particularly his childhood is shrouded in myth. He was the son of the king of Persia, which at the time was a vessel kingdom of the Median Empire under the reign of its last monarch Astyages. Legend tells that Astyages had two prophetic dreams of Cyrus's mother Mandane (Astyages daughter). In the dream a great flood swells forth from Mandane pelvis followed by grape vines which grow to envelop Astyages's empire. In the legend Astyages summons Mandane and commands her to kill her unborn child as it will grow to usurp him. Upon Cyrus's birth the task falls to a man called Harpagus (the scene is depicted in the second image) who delegates the task in turn to a shepherd called Mithradates. The shepherd instead of killing Cyrus presents Harpagus with his own stillborn son's corpse. It is said that ten years later the shepherd and Cyrus are brought before Mandane following an altercation, Mithradates confesses, Cyrus is sent back to his biological parents and Mandane plots revenge against Harpagus. Mandane has Harpagus's son butchered and served to him unwittingly. Following the meal Harpagus's is shown the remaining limbs and head of his son to reveal his cannibalism.

Through the revolt of Cyrus and a group of nobles. Cyrus indeed rises to usurp Mandune's throne controlling the Median Empire. Through a series of conquests he comes to annex Lydia in Asian Minor and the Neo-Babylonian Empire. His conquests only end with his death in battle in the southern most provinces of the Steppes region. He is defeated by a Scythian Empress Tomyris. One version of the events states that she has his body brought to her, decapitated and placed in a vassal of blood so that he could final sate his blood-lust.
