James II, an increasingly disliked monarch, was overthrown, and William II along with his wife Mary ascended to the throne. James II had unpopular religious tolerance laws, catholic sympathies, and ties to France, but the tipping point happened with the birth of his son who was made heir instead of his protestant daughter Mary. This threat of a catholic dynasty in England was poorly met, and those who opposed it led William of Orange to lead his army over the channel.
