Began as a Protestant revival movement, but it began to evolve and include Baptists and Methodists. This surge in religion and devotion created a push for social reform as well. Some social reform movements for temperance, women's rights, and abolition of slavery.
Importance—It sowed the seeds for the abolition of slavery and women's rights. Also brought to light the power that personal belief and religion could have within the government.
Connection—The third phase of the Second Great Awakening followed the Era of Good Feelings cementing the effects of the political lull at the time, allowing religions to rise up in place of the government.
