The words troubadour and trouvere both translate to "lyric poet" in their own languages (occitan and old french respectively). They began to introduce the idea of contrafactum, putting a new text over an old melody. Their songs are strophic and mostly syllabic, with some possessing a refrain (a repeat of BOTH text and melody). These songs frequently feature the subject of courtly love.
