He was perhaps England’s most infamous king, largely responsible for England's split from Catholicism. In 1527, he, a practicing catholic, tried to divorce his wife through the church. The Catholic church said no, and their relationship soured. Whether for reasons personal, political, or mixed, throughout the 1530s and 1540s Henry drifted away from the catholic church—especially papal authority.
