“This council was the Church’s response to the Protestant reformers. The council reaffirmed Church teaching on papal supremacy, the doctrine of transubstantiation, the sacrifice of the Mass, the Sacrament of Penance as the normal means of forgiveness for sin committed after Baptism, the number of sacraments, and the necessity of both faith and good works for Salvation.
