Hundreds of years before the Europeans were mining in Southwest Wisconsin, the Ho-Chunk, Mesquakie, Sauk, and other Indian tribes. The mined places where it was easily accessible lead. By the 1680s a French fur trader named Nicolas Perrot had started trading with the Natives there. In 1760 the French stopped and the mines were guarded by the Native Americans.
