Hundreds of years before the Europeans were mining in Southwest Wisconsin, the Ho-Chunk, Mesquakie, Sauk, and other Indian tribes. The mined places where it was easily accessible lead. By the 1680s a French fur trader named Nicolas Perrot had started trading with the Natives there. In 1760 the French stopped and the mines were guarded by the Native Americans. Lead was in demand and was manufactured to pewter, pipes, weights, paint, and ammunition.
