Filippo Brunelleschi was born in Florence, Italy in 1377. His family was not poor, they did well for themselves. He was intended to follow in the footsteps of his father, so he was given an education that consisted of mathematics and literature at a young age. However, he was artistically inclined and accepted into the Silk Merchant’s Guild. In 1398, Brunelleschi became a master goldsmith and sculptor. His first sculptures were made in 1399-1400, and made of bronze. The sculptures were of saints and evangelists. These sculptures were made mostly for the catholic church. In 1400 Florence celebrated the end of the plague. This celebration was aided by Brunelleschi’s sculptures. After sculptures, Brunelleschi’s first architectural project started in 1419. His project was sponsored by the guild to which he belonged, the SIlk Merchant’s Guild. His project was an orphanage called Ospedale degli Innocenti. His next project was the Basilica of San Lorenzo. He started this project in 1421. This was the largest church in Florence, sponsored by the Medici family, whose tombs were located there. He was an architect for a long time after this, creating many beautiful cathedrals and other buildings, mostly related to religious affairs. Aside from architecture, he pioneered the linear perspective. This is now the way many other paintings were made in the renaissance. Brunelleschi died sometime in April of 1446.
